The Masai Mara is one of Kenya’s finest legendary wildlife areas. Made ever more famous in the film ‘Out of Africa’ and in TV’s Big Cat Diaries – it is evocative and romantic – a broad vista peppered with predators and prey. Situated in the bowl of the Great Rift Valley it allows the imagination to assume that little has changed here over millennia. Although on the equator, the climate is temperate, with warm sunny days and crisp cool nights; the air is so clear that even the waving yellow grasses seems to sparkle.
Duma Safari Camp is a small privately owned tented safari camp in the heart of Masai Mara bordering the great game reserve. It is ideally placed to view the annual wildebeest migration as it crosses the Mara River from the Serengeti. To witness this natural spectacle is one of the great wonders of the African continent, and people travel from all over the globe to watch and wonder at the death defying feats of these mighty herds. This year however promises to be different. Due to the recent political riots in Kenya and the adverse effects of international media coverage, tourism in that country is facing a 90% drop. In the Masai Mara alone many camps are forced to close and lay off loyal staff members – many of whom are the sole earners of their family groups. The situation is tragic and seems unfair when the unrest areas were generally far from tourist routes. On the upside of this is the fact that if you ever wanted to visit any of Kenya’s unique and exceptional wildlife areas, but were put off by the fleets of zebra striped buses that Kenya has become equally famous for in latter years – then now is definitely the time! African travel is never without risk, and those of us who live in and love this continent are all too aware of this – it certainly adds an edge of vitality to scenes of such incredible beauty. It would be pure hedonism otherwise! A regular visitor to Duma Camp is Hoedspruit local, and internationally renowned artist, Keith Joubert – who often spends time there researching and collecting references for his paintings. Duma (meaning Cheetah in Swahili) Camp is small enough to be personal. It is also eco friendly, running on rain water and solar lighting. The Maasai staff all hail from the nearby manyattas and are proud to show you around their villages, and teach you about their customs and local knowledge. Thursdays are market days in the small settlement of Aitong. Maasai travel from all over the Mara with cattle and goats to trade – coming together in a splash of red shukas (blankets) with elaborate beadwork that brightens up the dun landscape. It is fascinating to watch the cattle being herded and handled with very little fuss and noise, to and from the main kraal. Women take the opportunity to trade their beadwork and produce for home ware, more beads and food at the open market place. As this is not a standard tourist venue, visitors are treated generally with courtesy and curiosity. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and due to the cancellations of international bookings, Duma is offering a couple of very special packages in an effort to lure visitors back. The Easter special, valid until end of July, offers three nights for the price of two at local rates (usually there is a different rate for non Kenyans) – US$ 730 per person full board, game drives and return shuttle flight from Nairobi to Ngerende airstrip; doesn’t include park entry tickets at US$40 per person per day.
The Migration Special is available from 20 July – 30 sept 08 provided it is booked and paid for in full by 15th April. At US$1460 per person it includes 4 days accommodation with full board, game drives, wine beer sodas mineral water nature walks, return shuttle flight from Nairobi to Ngerende airstrip AND park entry tickets!!! These packages do not include international flights to Nairobi. The migration will never be this cheap again! Please visit the website at www.duma-mara.com for more information and bookings.

Duma Safari Camp is located in the heart of Maasai country, bordering Kenya’s great Masai Mara Game Reserve. It is a traditional safari camp in true ‘Out of Africa’ style – and the smallest upscale camp in the Mara. Duma is an ideal base from which to enjoy the spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration from Serengeti in Tanzania to Masai Mara.

It is while in Masai Mara that the migration is at its most concentrated. “Mara” means “spotted’ and at this time the vast plains of the Great Rift Valley are literally spotted with wildebeest and zebra, and other game – with their attendant predators. Lions, leopards and cheetahs – as seen in Big Cat Diary – feast on the periphery of this massive herd movement.

Duma Safari Camp is the tented camp of choice for many including artists, photographers and writers, who enjoy the privacy, personal attention and informal atmosphere found there.
